Ausiàs March
(Gandía ?, 1397-Valencia, 1459) Medieval poet in the Catalan language.Son of Pere March and nephew of Jaume March, Ausiàs March spent his youth in the exercise of arms and in 1415 he represented the military establishment in the Cortes of Valencia, when he had not yet been knighted.

In 1419, having obtained the title, he enlisted in the expedition of Alfonso V of Aragón to Sardinia and Corsica. In 1424 he joined the squad under the command of Federico de Luna, who was going to fight against the pirates of the seas of Sicily and North Africa, where he had an outstanding performance in the attack on the island of Gelves.
In 1429 he settled in Gandía.Alfonso V rewarded his services by granting him absolute powers in the jurisdiction of Beniarjó, Pardinas and Verniza, and also named him the greatest falconer of the falconry services that the king had in Valencia.Subsequently, Ausiàs March was involved in numerous lawsuits; some with their vassals and others with the officers of Juan de Navarra, Duke of Gandía.He married twice, with Isabel Martorell (1437), sister of the novelist Joanot Martorell, and with Joana Escorna (1443), remaining a widower on both occasions.
Ausiàs March was the first cultured Catalan poet to break with the Provençal tradition. His work, composed of 143 poems, is characterized by a novel combination of themes and forms inherited from Provencal troubadours and the dolce stil novo , and by his doctrinal and philosophical reflections, which reflect the moral evolution of the Author.
A first cycle (1427-1445) focuses on the poems addressed to Llir entre cards and Plena de seny , pseudonyms of the ladies who motivated. The second cycle, which lasts until the death of the poet, includes the six Cantos de muerte , the Canto spiritual and the philosophical poems.
The most remarkable thing about Ausiàs March is the purity with which it uses the Catalan language. In 1539 Baltasar Romaní collected forty-six poems with their corresponding translation into Spanish, and in 1560 the writer and musician Jorge de Montemayor translated ninety-seven poems.Ausiàs March's work is considered the most extensive of medieval literature in its cultural area; As an introducer of Italian trends, his role in Catalan literature is comparable to that of Garcilaso de la Vega (whose work he influenced) in Spanish literature.
