Eleonora Duse

(Vigevano, 1858-Pittsburgh, 1924) Italian actress.Considered one of the greatest actresses of her time, an excellent interpreter of common melodramas, Eleonora Duse was the daughter of an actor who owned a traveling company.

She got some recognition with her portrayal of Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare, but her success came in the city ​​of Naples with the work of Émile Augier Les Fourchambault , which made the theater actor Cesare Rossi choose her as the first lady of his company, in which she achieved great international success: in New York she obtained a great triumph in her role as Margarita Gautier in The Lady of the Camellias , by Alexandre Dumas.

A close friend of the Italian poet and playwright Gabriele D'Annunzio, from 1897 she dedicated herself to interpreting dramas by this author, such as La Gioconda and Francesca de Rimini .He retired in 1909 due to poor health.In 1916 he played his only film, Cendre .Financial problems forced her to return to the stage in 1921, and for three years she toured England and the United States.At this time Eleonora Duse played the roles of an older woman: among others, that of Hélène Halving in Les Revenants , by Henrik Ibsen.
