(Turin, 1909-Rome, 1992) Historian and critic of Italian art.Like other essayists of his generation, Giulio Carlo Argan was influenced by the great Italian literary critic and historian Benedetto Croce and Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti.

Inspector of the State museums and professor of art history at the universities of Palermo and Rome, of whose city he was mayor (1976-1979 ), developed after World War II an intense activity in the promotion and dissemination of contemporary art.From his abundant bibliography we must mention the analyzes of the history of architecture, which range from the Renaissance and the Baroque to the modern currents of the 20th century ( Baroque architecture in Italy , 1957), the monographs of artists ( Botticelli , 1957, and those dedicated to Fra Angélico and Francesco Borromini) and other diverse essays ( The art of the 20th century , 1977), all books that reflect their conceptual interpretation of the artwork.
