José Antonio Saco y López
(Bayamo, 1797-Barcelona, 1879) Cuban writer and politician.His abolitionist activities led him to exile in Trinidad (1834) and from there he went to Spain, where he began a campaign in favor of the development of his native island.He was elected three times deputy to the Cortes (1835-1837) and opposed the American annexationist policy.He wrote a History of slavery in 4 volumes (1875-1879), completed by Vidal Morales (1883-1893).
