Jose Maria Heredia Biography

José María Heredia

(Santiago, 1803-Mexico, 1839) Cuban poet.José María Heredia studied Latin grammar in Caracas and law in Havana.Considered one of the pioneers of romanticism in Latin America, he played a guiding role in the first decades of independent America: he made known European literary trends and translated poems by Goethe, Lord Byron, Ugo Foscolo and Alphonse de Lamartine, among others.

In 1820 he wrote the poem Descriptive fragments of a Mexican poem , which later appeared with the title En El Teocalli de Cholula , with a meditative and melancholic tone, a characteristic that is repeated in all his works.With this work the Latin American poetic romanticism was inaugurated.Denounced for conspiring against Spanish rule, he had to flee to Boston; Hymn of the exile (1825) and the tragedy Sila (1825) correspond to this stage.In 1836 he returned to Cuba, after retracting his revolutionary ideals, and traveled to Mexico, where he died three years later.
