José María Lemus
(El Salvador, 1911-San José, Costa Rica, 1993) Salvadoran military and politician.Minister of the Interior (1949-1955), he was elected President of the Republic (1956-1960).His government, of a liberal nature, allowed the return of exiles and the release of numerous political prisoners.
A sample of their willingness to comply with their commitments was the repeal of the Law for the Defense of Democratic and Constitutional Order, which had clearly undemocratic aspects. The relative tolerance shown by the Lemus regime allowed the reactivation of unions, student organizations and political formations.
However, his administration was unable to halt the economic and social decline, and ended up harshly repressing opponents, going so far as to declare a state of siege.A coup organized by the National Front for Civic Orientation, which brought together unions, students and center-left parties, brought it down in 1960.
