Joseph Townsend

(Clare Hall, 1739-?, 1816) British traveler.A doctor and clergyman, he can be considered one of Malthus's forerunners.He traveled through Spain between 1786-1787 and, after the trip, he wrote the work Viaje por España (3 vols., 1791), with a philosophical spirit and great informative detail and which constitutes a very valuable source for the knowledge of the Spain of the s.XVIII, especially from Catalonia and Valencia.It contains an appendix: The prices of wages in Spain between 1786 and 1787 , which contains a large amount of information on the Spanish economy.
