Abba Eban

(Aubrey Solomon Meir; Cape Town, 1915-Tel Aviv, 2002) Israeli politician.Transferred with his family to England, Abba Eban was trained at Queen's College, Cambridge University, for which he graduated in philology, and early embraced the Zionist cause, eventually presiding over the Zionist Youth.

During World War II he was a collaborator of the Allies (he was attached to the British Intelligence Service), and, since the creation of the State of Israel, he was the representative of the new country to the UN (1948-1959).As ambassador to Washington, a position he held from 1950 to 1959, he sought to increase US aid to Israel.

Later he was Minister without portfolio, of Education and Culture (1960-1963), Deputy Prime Minister (1963-1966) and Minister of Foreign Affairs (1966-1974), a period in which he had to face the consequences of the Six Day War (1967) and the Yom Kippur War (1973).In 1988, after thirty years of membership in the Labor Party, he left the seat he had held in the Israeli Parliament since 1959.He is the author of various works, including Voice of Israel ( 1947), My people: the history of the Jews (1968), My country: the history of modern Israel (1973) and Israel through my eyes (1993).In 1978 he published his autobiography.
