Ángela Peralta

(Mexico City, 1845-Mazatlán, Mexico, 1883) Mexican singer.Endowed with a prodigious voice, she made her debut in 1860, when she was only fifteen years old.Her success was such that she was able to travel to Europe-in the company of her father-to perform in several major cities.She gave concerts in Cádiz and at the Teatro Real in Madrid.On May 23, 1862, she was applauded at the legendary Scala in Italian Milan.By virtue of her vocal qualities and the grace of her performances, she was known by the nickname of the Mexican Nightingale.In addition to singing, she was an accomplished harpist and composed numerous romantic pieces, including gallops, dances, fantasies, and waltzes.Of her repertoire as a composer, the songs Mexico, A memory of my homeland, Nostalgia, Goodbye to Mexico, Thinking of you and Margarita are remembered above all.In 1883, during a series of performances she gave in Mazatlán, she contracted yellow fever and died on the upper floors of the Rubio Theater, where she had her temporary accommodation.
