Giovanni Leone

(Naples, 1908-Rome, 2001) Italian politician, President of the Republic from December 1971 to December 1978.He obtained a law degree in 1930 and a year later he graduated in Social and Political Sciences from the University of Camerino, where he was a student of Enrico de Nicola, future President of the Republic.In 1933, after obtaining a doctorate in both specialties, he began his teaching career, which throughout his life would alternate with politics and the practice of law from his Neapolitan law firm.

He held the chair of Law at the universities of Camerino, Messina, Bari, Naples and Rome.He enrolled in the Christian Democracy (DC) in 1944, and in 1945 he was elected political secretary of the Neapolitan section.Likewise, with the end of the war he was awarded the rank of lieutenant colonel of the military justice system.In 1946 he was elected deputy in the Constituent Assembly and was part of the "Commission of 75" that drew up the Constitution.

Again deputy in 1948, two years later he acceded to the vice-presidency of the Chamber and in 1955 he succeeded Giovanni Gronchi, who took over as head of state.He retained this function for eight years, and on June 21, 1963, he was appointed prime minister, leading a single-color Christian Democratic government that lasted until December 4 of the same year.

A year later he ran unsuccessfully for the presidency of the Republic against the Social Democrat Giuseppe Saragat, and in 1967 he was appointed senator for life.In 1968, from June 24 to December 12, he presided over a second one-color government, as brief as the previous one.On December 22, 1971, after twenty-three votes, he was elected President of the Republic by 518 votes from a college of 1,008 electors (deputies and senators).He assumed his duties on December 28.

On June 15, 1978, half a year before the end of his term, he resigned before various press reports that accused him of tax evasion, real estate fraud and involvement in the bribery scandal of the Lockheed aeronautical company, among other financial irregularities.In his place the socialist Sandro Pertini was elected.Leone then resumed his seat as senator for life in the ranks of the Mixed Group.Author of numerous legal works, some of them, such as Procedural Law Treaty , have been translated into numerous languages.
