Guillermo Fernández Shaw
(Guillermo Fernández Shaw and Iturralde; Madrid, 1893-1965) Journalist, playwright and librettist, son of Carlos Fernández Shaw.Graduated in law, he began his professional career in the journalistic world, being part of the staff of editors of La Época from 1911 to 1936.He collaborated in various publications, such as Blanco y Negro , ABC , The Mondays of El Imparcial , Las Provincias and Aristocratic Life , in addition to being a correspondent in Madrid of the Diario de Barcelona .

On the death of his father, which occurred in 1911, he decided to continue the task that he had begun in librettos of zarzuelas and sainetes, especially from of the friendship that began with Federico Romero in 1916, with whom he would become the greatest exponent of the "boy genre" of the 20th century and with whom he would produce librettos for famous musicians such as Federico Moreno Torroba, Amadeo Vives, Eduardo Granados, Jacinto Guerrero.And Jesús Guridi, among others.This close collaboration was cut short, due to personal disagreements, in the 1950s, when he decided to continue writing alone or together with other collaborators, especially with his brother Rafael.
Among the works from his first stage with Federico Romero, it is worth mentioning the ballads La sonata de Grieg (1916) and La serranilla (1919); the lyrical comedies El caserío (1926), Las alondras (1927) and Don't forget me (1935); the drama La severa (1925); the farce Blancaflor (1925); the operas Los boasters (1920) and La malquerida ; the operettas Luz de mayo (1934) and Mambrú goes to war (1945); the sainetes The good souls (1918), La Cibeles (1936), La Rosario or La Rambla at the end of the century (1939), and las zarzuelas The song of oblivion (which was the first work with which the duo became known in 1916), Doña Francisquita , from 1923, inspired by The discreet lover of Lope de Vega, The dictator (1923), La meiga (1928), Los flamencos (1928) , The saffron rose (1930), Luisa Fernanda (1932), La Chulapona (1934), The port innkeeper (1936) and La Lola is going to ports , among many others.
Of the works he wrote together with his brother Rafael, the musical comedy Pierrot and the zarzuelas El canastillo de fresas (1951) stand out, among others.And María Manuela (1957).
