John Tyndall
(Leighlin Bridge, Ireland, 1820-Hindhead, United Kingdom, 1893) Irish physicist. After having practiced the profession of engineer, he devoted himself to the study of natural philosophy and went on to become a professor at the Royal Institution (1853-1887).
John Tyndall
As a collaborator of British scientist Michael Faraday he carried out numerous experiments on the attractive force of magnetism and on diamagnetism, but it especially known for his studies on the conduction of heat in gases and vapors.During these studies he identified the phenomenon of light diffusion by suspended particles in a colloidal solution (Tyndall effect or phenomenon).
In 1871 he discovered the phenomenon of re-ice, thanks to which he explained the march of the glaciers.John Tyndall was also interested in biology; He fought the theory of spontaneous generation and developed a sterilization method. An outstanding mountaineer, he made the second ascent of the Matterhorn (previously climbed by Edward Whymper) and the first of the Weisshorn (1861).
