José Baptista Pinheiro de Azevedo

(Luanda, 1917-Lisbon, 1983) Portuguese military and politician.Commander of the naval rifle forces (1972), he participated in the revolution of April 25, 1974.He was chief of the High Staff of the navy and a member of the National Salvation Board.Supported by the moderate sectors of the army, in 1975 he replaced Vasco Gonçalves as prime minister.Presidential candidate in the 1976 elections, he was forced to abandon active politics due to illness.After founding the Portuguese Social Democracy Movement in 1977, he permanently retired in 1979.
