José Figueres

(José Figueres Ferrer; Alajuela, Costa Rica, 1906-San José, id., 1990) Costa Rican politician who was President of the Republic three times: 1948-1949, 1953-1958 and 1970-1974.The son of a Catalan doctor, José Figueres Ferrer founded the Social Democratic Party and, persecuted by President Rafael Ángel Calderón, had to go into exile in Mexico (1942-1944).

When Calderón tried to ignore the result of the 1948 elections, which gave victory to Otilio Ulate, José Figueres led the revolutionary movement that finally came to power.President of the Provisional Board, dictated a set of measures of great importance, such as the dissolution of the army and the nationalization of the bank, before handing over power to Otilio Ulate in 1949.

Later elected president ( 1953-1958) by the National Liberation Party, Figueres developed a social democratic policy that included measures such as the nationalization of the banks, the reform of education and the prohibition of the Communist Party.His government work made him a benchmark for the democratic left in Latin America.
