José Luis Abellán
(Madrid, 1933) Spanish thinker and essayist.He studied high school at the Ramiro de Maeztu Institute and a degree in Philosophy and Letters at the University of Madrid, from which he graduated in 1957; three years later he received his doctorate in philosophy from the same university.He taught in Puerto Rico, Northern Ireland and, later, as a professor at the Complutense University of Madrid.

His most important work is the Critical History of Spanish Thought (in seven volumes, 1979-1992), in which he synthesizes the evolution of ideas and philosophy in Spain since Roman times, taking into account the Latin, Arab and Hebrew substratum that shapes peninsular thought and the birth and development of national identity.In 1981 he received the National Essay Award for the first three volumes of this work, the edition of which ended in 1992.
He dealt with the subject of Spain in works such as Culture in Spain.Essay for a diagnosis (1971) and Vision of Spain in the generation of 98 (1968), on the attitudes adopted by authors such as Miguel de Unamuno, Pío Baroja or Azorín before the Spanish decline ; such matter is also present in his direction of the collective work El exilio español de 1939 (six volumes).
He is also the author of Spanish erasmism (1976) and Paris, or the world is a palace (1987), a narrative work.His publications from the 1990s include the essay entitled José Gaos How does a philosopher adapt to Mexican culture? (1993) and Ideas para el Siglo XXI (1994).In his attempt to recover lost or forgotten authors, Abellán has edited the works of Alfonso de Valdés, Fernando de Castro, Pérez de Oliva and Alonso de Castrillo, among others.
