José Sarney

(Maranhão, Brazil, 1930) Brazilian politician.He developed his political career within various formations of liberal ideology, such as the pro-government Arena party, as well as the Social Democratic Party.Throughout the fifties and sixties he was repeatedly elected deputy and senator, and held the position of governor of the state of Maranhão between 1965 and 1970.In 1984 he founded the Liberal Party, with which he participated in the 1985 elections, in which he was elected vice president.However, the death of the president-elect, Tancredo Neves, of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party and head of Sarney's candidacy, made him the new president of Brazil.His mandate was characterized by the strengthening of Brazilian democracy, but also by a serious economic crisis.After leaving the presidency in 1990, he continued his political career and in 1996 he was elected president of the Senate.
