Albert Finney
(Saldford, 1936-London, 2019) British actor.He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made his theater debut in 1956.In the late 1950s he played almost exclusively Shakespearean roles, but in the 1960s he took a step forward with his portrayal of rebellious youth in Billy Liar , on the London stage, and with his work in the film Saturday night, Sunday morning (1960), by Karel Reisz.

His popularity increased thanks to films written by John Osborne and directed by Tony Richardson.His excellent work in Tom Jones (1963), a film based on the novel by Henry Fielding, catapulted him to fame, and he has since been hailed as the "second Olivier"; Lawrence Olivier himself endorsed him as "the best actor of his generation." Albert Finney was indeed recognized as one of the chameleon actors par excellence, for his drastic changes in performances.In his own words, "to be an actor is to have the possibility of inhabiting a series of characters.I would like to be different each time".
He has already become one of the most prominent interpreters of the free cinema , in 1965 he founded his own production company, Memorial Enterprises, and went on to direct some films not well received by critics, such as Charlie Bubbles (1968), in which he also participated as an actor, along with Liza Minnelli.His position in the field of independent cinema was consolidated with the excellent Two on the road (1967), by Stanley Donen, which he co-starred with Audrey Hepburn, and with films such as Thank you very much, Mr.Scrooge (1970), by Ronald Neame, and After Love (1981), by Alan Parker.
He also shot blockbuster films such as Murder in the Orient Express (1974), by Sidney Lumet, or The actor's shadow (1983), by Peter Yates, and a masterful adaptation by John Huston of Malcolm Lowry's novel, Under the volcano (1984), in which he played an alcoholic and self-destructive consul.His latest performances include those of A Fallen Angel (1987), by Alan J.Pakula, Death among the Flowers (1990), by the Ethan and Joel Coen brothers, A man of no importance (1994) and Erin Brockovich (2000).Since the 1990s, he has often worked on television series.
Finney was nominated for the Oscar for best actor four times, for his roles in the aforementioned Tom Jones , Murder on the Orient Express , The Actor's Shadow and Under the Volcano , and although he never achieved the precious statuette, he garnered numerous acting awards at the European scope.Other prominent titles from his filmography are Sherlock Holmes's Smartest Brother (1975), The Browning Version (1994) and Washington Square (1997 ).From his first marriage in 1957 to actress Jane Wenham, his son Simon was born, who also entered the world of cinema.Between 1970 and 1978 he was married to Anouk Aimée.
