Abel Janszoon Tasman

(Lutjegast, Groningen, 1603-Batavia, today Jakarta, 1659) Dutch navigator.In his travels through the southern Pacific Ocean, borne by the governor general of the Company of the Dutch Indies, A.van Diemen, he discovered the island of Tasmania and the south island of New Zealand, in 1642, as well as the archipelagos of Fiji and Tonga, in 1643.In 1644 it entered the Gulf of Carpentaria, in Australia.
