After having followed in Paris, for a semester, the psychopathology courses given by Pierre Janet at la Salpêtrière (1902), He returned to Zurich, worked at the Burghölzli clinic under the guidance of Eugen Bleuler and carried out studies that soon made him famous ( Diagnostiche Assoziations-Studien , 1904-1906).
In 1905 he was appointed a free professor of psychiatry. While he was still working in the last clinic mentioned, of which he had become chief physician, he met Sigmund Freud in 1907, with whom he began a fruitful collaboration. He was editor of the Jahrbuch für psychoanalytische und psychopathologische Forschungen , directed by Bleuler and Freud, and in 1911 he became president of the newly founded International Psychoanalytic Association.
From 1933 to 1942 he was a professor at the Zurich Polytechnic. Then he left teaching for health reasons; the same cause led him in 1946 to resign from the chair of medical psychology at the University of Basel, which he had accepted in 1944.In 1943 he was made an honorary member of the Schweizerische Akademie der Medizinischen Wissenschaften. In 1948, the C.G.Jung Institute was created in Zurich, at the initiative of various Swiss and foreign personalities, which coordinates the activity of the Jungian school of psychology, publishes important works and promotes the holding of national and international congresses and meetings.
In 1955 Jung's eightieth anniversary was widely commemorated all over the world, but particularly in Zurich and Küssnacht (Lake Zurich), his habitual residence. His works translated into other languages include The self and the unconscious , The problem of the unconscious in modern psychology , Psychological types , Psychology and religion , Psychology and alchemy , Reality of the soul , Psychology of the unconscious , Psychology and education , The Mystery of the Golden Flower (with Richard Wilheim) and Prolegomena to the Scientific Study of Mythology (with Károly Kerenyi).
