Émile Verhaeren

(Sint-Amands, Antwerp, 1855-Rouen, 1916) Belgian poet in the French language.His poetic work exerted a notable influence on European poetry in the early 20th century.

A friend of Belgian artists Fernand Khnopff and James Ensor, Émile Verhaeren published important essays on art in the Journal des beaux-arts et de la littérature and L'art moderne .After presenting his first collections of poems ( Los flamencos, 1883; Los monjes, 1886), marked by the Parnassian influence, he went through a moral and religious crisis that led him to write his first notable works: The Afternoons (1887), The Disasters (1888), The Black Torches (1891).
