Georgi Plejanov

(Georgi or Gueorgui Valentinovich Plejanov; Gudalovka, central Russia, 1857-Terijoki, Finland, 1918) Thinker and activist of Russian socialism.He is considered the introducer in Russia of the thought of Marx and Engels.Born into a family of the gentry, he joined the revolutionary circles that fought against Tsarism since his student days.

Exiled in Switzerland since 1880, there he met Lenin and converted him to Marxist ideas; There he also founded, in 1883, the Emancipation of Labor group, the embryo of the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party (which he would contribute to found in 1894).At the same time, he developed a whole theoretical work following the ideas of the social democracy of central and western Europe (his Essay on the monist conception of history, of 1895 stands out).

When in 1903 the party split between Lenin's Bolsheviks (in favor of turning the party into the vanguard of an immediate revolution, supported by the peasantry) and the Mensheviks of Martov (more supporters of a gradual social democratic strategy, which would go through the capitalist industrialization of Russia and the growth of a working class that would make socialist ideas triumph), Georgi Plekhanov leaned towards the former, to decide more late for the latter; In any case, he tried in vain to restore the unity of the party in 1906-12, with which he only managed to be excluded from both groups.

The Revolution of 1917 allowed him to return to Russia, where he opposed the conceptions of Lenin and Trotsky, he disqualified the October Revolution and asked to join forces for national defense against Germany.His last year of life was spent between misunderstanding and mistreatment by the Bolsheviks since they came to power.
