His first professional experience behind a Camera was as assistant director in Sweet hours (1981), directed by Carlos Saura and with his father as producer. After finishing his degree, he had the opportunity to direct Tres en la marca in 1988, as part of the collective project Seven footprints , with which he won the Arriaga Theater Award in Bilbao. The film Seven footprints , made by seven directors and produced by Elías Querejeta, was made up of seven half-hour long medium-length films, made by each of the directors, and was offered in chapters by the second channel from TVE at the end of 1990.
Later, together with Nacho Pérez and Jesús Ruiz, he made the documentary El viaje del agua (1990), Goya award for best short film in its 1991 edition , and a chapter from the series Man and Industry , broadcast on television. In October 1992, at the 37th International Film Week (Seminci) of Valladolid, he presented his first feature film, A way station , produced by his father, Elías Querejeta, who also signed the script for the film.Starring Omero Antonutti and Bibi Andersson, and with actors such as Joaquín Almeida, Santiago Alonso and Luis Crespo in the cast, the film was awarded the Special Jury Prize (homologated to the highest prize awarded at the Seminci, the Espiga de Gold).
A way station is an intimate painting that reflects a wide set of characters, organized like a puzzle whose pieces fit together neatly and meticulous precision to compose a harmonious landscape. The plot revolves around an adolescent who discovers his surroundings, questions himself about those around him, delves into childhood secrets, interferes in the privacy of others and tries to find, after all, a coherence that allows him the clarification of the mystery, the abandonment of myths and the access to maturity. It is a film, therefore, that speaks of the end of innocence, of moral growth, of the emotional tear of how one suffers at the crossroads and of everything that is lost along the way.
His next work was the ambitious project The Last Trip of Robert Rylands (1996), a film shot entirely in Oxford (Great Britain) with an English cast, whose story is based on Javier Marías's novel All Souls ; the result was not to the liking of the critics or the public, obtaining little impact. In When you come back to my side (1999), the story of three sisters who meet again after the death of their mother, Gracia Querejeta did a great job directing actresses; the film received a Goya award for best photography.
Héctor (2004), starring actress Adriana Ozores and winner of the award for best film at the Malaga Film Festival, and Seven French Billiard Tables (2007), with Maribel Verdú in the lead role and ten Goya Award nominations.Gracia Querejeta has also directed various documentaries for Televisión Española (TVE) and for the documentary film series El ojos de la Cámara , produced by her father.
