Gustav Nachtigal

German explorer (Eichstedt, Prussia, 1834-at sea, 1885).This military doctor left the Prussian army in 1861 and settled in Tunis as a doctor of the bey; from there he began to carry out exploratory forays into the Sahara desert.

In 1869 he was commissioned by the Prussian government to establish relations with the Sultan of Bornu (a kingdom that extended around Lake Chad , currently in northern Nigeria); To do this, he had to cross the Sahara from north to south, exploring the unknown region of Tibesti.He then continued east on his own, exploring central Sudan until reaching the Nile, returned to Europe via Egypt (1875) and recounted the experience in the book Sahara and Sudan (1879-81).

After a few years as consul of the unified Germany in Tunisia, in 1884 he was sent to the Gulf of Guinea by Bismarck, with the mission of establishing the bases for a colonial presence in the territories recognized by Great Britain in exchange of the German renunciation of all claims to Nigeria; effectively, he founded the protectorates of Togo and Cameroon, helping to lay the foundations of the German colonial empire in Africa.His mission accomplished, he died during the journey back to Germany.
