James Olds
(1922-1976) American psychologist.He studied at Amherst College and received his doctorate from the Harvard Social Relations Laboratory in 1952, working with Richard Salomon.In 1953 he moved to McGill as a fellow to learn physiological techniques.There he discovered that electrical stimulation of the septal area, the lateral hypothalamus, and some other areas could act as a reward; this was one of the most significant physiological contributions to learning.He became a member of the department of psychology at the University of Michigan, where he continued to explore the anatomy, pharmacology, and behavioral characteristics of reward for brain stimulation.In 1967 he went to the California Institute of Technology, where he remained until his death; There he devoted himself mainly to the study of learning.
