John Pym
(Brymore, 1584-London, 1643) English politician.Puritan, he opposed Catholicism and royal authority.He was one of the main promoters of the Petition for Rights (1628).In 1641 he achieved the death sentence of Strafford.Carlos I's attempt to arrest him (1642) accelerated the outbreak of the civil war because of his alliance with the Covenanters.When he died, he was discredited for his authoritarianism.
