In our previous article we have seen how Hidalgo transformed from priest into revolutionary .After the Scream of Sorrows , Hidalgo will become one of the leaders of the revolutionary movement.
From Dolores they set out with their followers to San Miguel el Grande , swelling its ranks with peasants, army officers and indigenous people.When passing through Atotonilco , priest Hidalgo took the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe , and constituted it as a banner of the independence army .
On September 22, Hidalgo was named General being the supreme command of a army of more than 50 thousand men.In his military campaign he took the city of Guanajuato .Then he advanced by Maravatio, Tepetongo, Hacienda de la Jorn ada, Ixtlahuaca and Toluca .On October 30 he confronts the realistic forces on the Mount of Crosses and defeats them.
But some adverse factors led to that Hidalgo did not attack the city of Mexico , but that the army was placed outside the capital, until it was decided to go back.November 7, in Aculco suffered a severe defeat, the army dispersed and lost all war submissions.The leaders divided to reorganize the army. Allende retired to Guajanato while Hidalgo marched to Guadalajara with a force of seven thousand men.
In Guadalajara the revolutionaries tried to form a Government .Enel Hidalgo was the highest authority, along with two other ministers.From this role, on December 6, 1810, he decreed the abolition of and slavery and tributes.But soon the setbacks came back: in Calderon Bridge the royalists overcame, and the Hidalgo army broke out.
This defeat marked the breakup of the other leaders with Hidalgo, who deposed him of his position as Generalisimo on January 25, 1810, relegating him to a position without real authority.The new strategy was to travel to the North of Mexico and United States , but on the way they were ambushed by Elizondo , who captured the maximum revolutionaries and handed them over to the Viceroy . Allende, Aldama and Jimenez were executed. Hidalgo would run a similar fate.
First he was prosecuted and the sentence of his priestly degradation was issued on July 27. Miguel Hidalgo was shot by the royalists on July 30, 1811 and after his death he was beheaded.The Spaniards placed his head and that of Allende, Aldama and Jimenez in iron cages and exhibited them in the angles of the Alhondiga Granaditas de Guanajuato .Its remains rest today in the Independence Column of the Mexico City.
