Liu Xiaobo, Nobel Peace Prize 2010

The recent award to the Chinese human rights activist Liu Xiaobo with the Nobel Peace Prize 2010 has put the world's problematic socio-political in China and the fight against authoritarianism.Thus, the committee that awards this renowned prize at the same time condemns the Chinese communist regime .From History Today Online we propose a review of the political struggle of Liu Xiaobo.

In 1989, the first momentous act of Liu Xiaobo in the fight for freedom in China occurs: the protest and killing of Tiananmen Square .At that time he was a professor at the Beijing Normal University and shortly before he had worked at American universities.When the protest peace was unleashed by thousands of students advocating an opening of the regime, Liu Xiaobo is part of it.

Since the reaction of the regime was negative than expected, Liu Xiaobo and others start a hunger strike on the esplanade of Beijing as a form of protest for a democratic change.When the army bursts into Tiananmen Square , they try a peaceful mediation, but the answer it is a bloody repression and a vile slaughter. Liu Xiaobo is imprisoned and remains a year and a half prisoner without any conviction.

After his liberation he continues his political struggle, which is worth a new arrest, in a field of "re-education for work" from 1996 to 1999.From there he will actively participate in the independent center Pen China , and will publish several books that are censored in their own country.
