Alessandro D'Ancona
(Pisa, 1835-Florence, 1914) Italian essayist and philologist.In 1859 he entered the Faculty of Law at the University of Turin, although later he would dedicate himself to the study of letters.In the latter city he maintained contact with Nigra and the men of New Italy, who ended up encouraging his already lively patriotism.At that time he dedicated himself to journalism, and in 1860 he obtained the chair of Italian literature at the University of Pisa.His life was embittered by some family misfortunes, such as the death of his daughter Julia, in whose memory he wrote Ricordi di Giulia (1898).In 1854, and after a serious scientific study, he published Discorso sulla vita e sulle dottrine di Tommaso Campanella ; This work started him in the quest for documented research, which made him one of the founders of the critical-historical method.The new Italian philological school had in Alessandro D'Ancona one of its best cultivators; In this area, it is worth mentioning his texts Popular poetry in Italy (1878) and The origins of theater in Italy (1887).
