Ángel Rubio

(Madrid, 1850-Vicálvaro, 1906) Spanish composer.He completed his musical studies at the Madrid Conservatory to later dedicate himself to composition.Rubio created a simple and easy-to-consume music that was very successful in Spain and Latin America in his time, although today it has fallen into complete oblivion.

He composed more than fifty magazine-style zarzuelas.His music does not possess a high style, nor subtleties, but an easy kindness and grace that in its day filled theaters.His main titles include The Phenomenon (1877), his first success, Parakeet among them (1877), The rigor of misfortunes ( 1878), We are already three (1880), Arms on our shoulders (1881), with a libretto by Mariano Pina, Two coffee canaries (1882 ) and Bulls in Paris (1884).

His most famous work was the comic aisle Al agua ducks , with a libretto by José Jackson Veyán, which was a great success during the summer of 1888.The play takes place in San Juan de Luz and successfully recreates the beach atmosphere.Rubio established the so-called "madrileños buffs", copies of the Bouffes Parisiènnes, based on nonsense.An example of them is Folies Bergère (1892).
