José María Pemán
(José María Pemán y Pemartín; Cádiz, 1898-1981) Spanish novelist, poet, playwright, screenwriter and essayist.Cultivator of all literary genres, he stood out for his poetic theater and his Andalusian comedies. His religious traditionalism and his monarchical convictions made him a representative of the conservative sectors, especially after the publication of the Poem of the Beast and the Angel (1938), where he sang the Francoist rebellion with epic triumphalism.
He grew up in a wealthy family, and began his long literary career during the Second Republic.José María Pemán, who years later would become one of the mythical figures of the Franco regime, became known with a series of inflammatory articles published in the Madrid newspaper ABC, from where he vehemently called for a military insurrection against republican legality. The most reactionary sectors of the country made him their champion, and fomented a painful controversy between the Cadiz writer and Ramón Pérez de Ayala.
At the end of the civil war, he was appointed director of the Royal Spanish Academy, a position he resigned a few years later.Pemán, then, devoted himself entirely to literary activity. He collaborated regularly in the press, and wrote traditional and traditional comedies, which were performed in some theaters in Madrid. The house (1946), Quiet as dead (1952), The three etceteras of Don Simón (1958) and The shipping widow (1960) are some of the most successful works of the writer.
Previously, the right-wing intellectual had written the historical dramas El divino impatient , from 1933-dedicated to the figure of San Francisco Javier-, When the Cortes of Cádiz (1934) and Cisneros (1934).Pemán was, in addition, the scriptwriter of several representative films of the national-Catholicism.As a narrator, he stood out for his light humor novels, such as Romance del fantasma y Doña Juanita (1927), Volaterías (1932), From Madrid to Oviedo (1932), Lord of your spirit (1943), The novel of San Martín (1955) and From Madrid to Oviedo passing through the Azores (1964).
The poetic work, with titles such as De la vida simples (1923), Señorita del mar (1934) and Poema de la Bestia and the Angel (1938), is characterized by its simplicity in forms and by the epic style of some of the verses, often in clear harmony with the topics of its political ideology. It is also worth mentioning, among other works, Metternich. The butterfly minister , The busy woman from paradise , The old man and the girls and The Seneca .
Pemán, who was considered a great speaker, gave lectures at numerous institutions throughout Spain and part of Latin America. The harangue tone of his speeches, translated into writings such as From man to man or in resounding statements such as "I'm a Christian and a Spaniard, which is to be a Christian twice!", Made him one of the authors officials of the dictatorship. The democratic opposition considered him a mediocre spokesman for the regime.
