José María Quadrado
(José María Quadrado y Nieto; Ciutadella, 1819-Palma de Mallorca, 1896) Spanish historian and archaeologist.He studied in Palma de Mallorca and was general archivist of the Balearic Islands.
He collaborated in the political campaigns of Jaime Balmes, from the pages of El Conciliator and El Pensamiento de la Nación.He founded the local magazine La Palma, and had a strong influence on the cultural life of Mallorca.
Catholic, traditionalist and romantic, he was a writer of fair judgment and controversial vigor.He is the author of an interesting historical work, Forensics and citizens: history of civil strife in Mallorca in the 15th century (1847).
He also wrote some verses and translated three Shakespearean dramas; but the highlight of his literary work is the contribution to Memories and Beauties of Spain by Pablo Piferrer and Francico Javier Parcerisa, with the volumes: Castilla la Nueva (1848-1850); Asturias and León (1855-1895); Valladolid, Palencia and Zamora (1864); Salamanca, Avila and Segovia (1872); and Aragón (1884).
Other outstanding works are his Religious, political and literary essays and The Prince of Viana .He took care of the edition of the Catalan chronicles of Marsili and Desclot, hitherto unpublished.
