Josep Torres y Clavé
(Josep Torres i Clavé; Barcelona, 1906-front of the Ebro, 1939) Spanish architect.He developed his activities in the field of drawing, watercolor and as a designer.Together with Josep Lluís Sert and Joan Baptista Subirana, he built the group of houses on the Paseo Torras i Bages in Barcelona, called Casa Bloc.
A great fan of painting, he decided, after contemplating the great works of the masters of the Renaissance, surrendering completely to their architectural studies.In 1930, a year after obtaining a degree from the Barcelona School of Architecture, Josep Torres i Clavé founded, together with Josep Lluís Sert, Joan Baptista Subirana and other architects, the Group of Catalan Artists and Technicians for the Progress of Architecture Contemporary (GATCPAC).
From then on, his professional work was always associated with that of Subirana and, above all, that of Sert, one of the great promises of European architecture.With them he took over the direction of the new magazine A.C.Documents of Contemporary Activity (organ of expression of the aforementioned group) and worked on the first important rationalist works erected in Catalonia: the Bloc house, the anti-tuberculosis dispensary of Barcelona, the City of Rest and Holidays of Castelldefels (Barcelona) and the Macià Plan for the urban development of Barcelona.
Josep Torres i Clavé was secretary of the Union of Architects of Catalonia (SAC), created in July 1936, a few days after the Civil War broke out (1936-1939), to deal with the situation exceptional that the country was beginning to experience.He held the position of delegate of the government of the Generalitat de Catalunya at the Barcelona School of Architecture, from which he worked to change the old academic structures.
He also collaborated with the state company Agrupación Colectiva de la Construcción de Barcelona, was a member of the committee of the mixed commission of the Administration and Control of Urban Property, and belonged to the military body of Engineers of the Republic.In 1938 he joined the ranks of the republican army; He died when he was already retreating from the Ebro front.
