José Serrano
(Sueca, 1873-Madrid, 1941) Spanish composer of zarzuelas.He received from his father, a band director, the first musical notions.He studied with Salvador Giner in Valencia and in Madrid with Chapí and Bretón.After the premiere of his first zarzuela, El motete (1900), he became a highly successful composer, author of numerous songs, masses and, above all, the music of almost a hundred zarzuelas, quite a few of which they are still valid, as it was fundamental in the transition from the boy genre to the "great zarzuela".His most important works are The Moorish Queen (1903), Moors and Christians (1905), Alma de Dios (1907), El amigo Melquiades (1914), The song of oblivion (1916), The carnations (1929) and La Dolorosa (1930 ).He is also the author of the Hymn to Valencia and Valencia sings .
