Joseph Flaugier
(Joseph Bernard or Josep Bernat Flaugier; Martigues, 1757-Barcelona, 1813) French painter active in Catalonia.He introduced the neoclassicism of David and Prud'hon in Barcelona.His most important work is the Coronation of the Virgin in the dome of the church of San Severo and San Carlos Borromeo in Barcelona, now the church of the Mercedarians.
Around 1760 the Flaugier's family settled in Tarragona; In 1773, Joseph Flaugier moved to Barcelona, where he entered the School of Fine Arts of la Llotja.As a painter of sacred themes, he made the frescoes that represent the cycle of the life of the Virgin Mary in the hermitage of Roser in Reus (Tarragona), in the monastery of Poblet (Tarragona, 1789, today lost) and in the church of San Carlos Borromeo and San Severo (Barcelona), on whose dome he painted the scene depicting the Coronation of the Virgin (1800) in fresco.

Between 1793 and 1800 he lived in Paris, where he was influenced and protection of the neoclassical painter Jacques Louis David, as well as that of Pierre Prud'hon.He made portraits, including those of Carlos IV and Queen María Luisa de Parma (1802, Barcelona City Council), that of José I Bonaparte (Barcelona Art Museum) and his self-portrait (City History Museum, Barcelona ).
Joseph Flaugier also carried out the wall decorations of the Vedruna house (Pedralbes palace) and the Miró house in Reus; It is also attributed that of the Castellarnau house in Tarragona.The Barcelona Art Museum preserves a good part of his drawings on a mythological and biblical theme and those inspired by popular customs, as well as engravings on religious iconography.From 1809 he held the position of director of the School of Drawing of la Llotja, an institution in which he had Salvador Mayol among other students.
